long exposure in the dark

the first time i tried a long exposure it was at day time capturing the river side. i’ve never done this before and was surprised why it is all white, when i already have seen images where the river looked like flowing silk. the first fault was that i had a too long exposure time. i’ve captured far too much light and it all went white. once i realized that it was darker but all blurry. the second fault was not having a tripod. so when one has the intend in making photos with longtime exposure you need nd filters, i didn’t use mine yet, since i’ve took photos in the dark only. the second thing you need is a tripod, i’m using this one.
